Quito, Nov 16 (Prensa Latina) More than 13.9 million Ecuadorians are called to the polls for a referendum and popular consultation on controversial proposals promoted by President Daniel Noboa, including the possibility of a new Constitution.

Polling stations will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (local time), at which time the counting of the four questions on the ballot will begin.

The first results are expected to begin being transmitted around 6:00 p.m. (local time), according to calculations by the National Electoral Council (CNE), which anticipates an irreversible trend by tonight, after 10:00 p.m. (local time).

According to official reports, approximately 118,000 police and military personnel will be deployed throughout the country to ensure a peaceful election.

Citizens will have to decide whether they wish to convene a Constituent Assembly to draft a new Constitution, and they also hold the power to decide on the return of foreign military bases, the reduction of legislators, and the end of public funding for political parties.

For social organizations and grassroots sectors, these reforms, proposed by Noboa, jeopardize hard-won rights, national sovereignty, and political representation.

The four proposals come amidst extreme violence, economic crisis, and institutional distrust.

Noboa expressed confidence in a “Yes” victory, but the outcome will ultimately be decided by the citizens in a process that will cost approximately $60 million.
