Angola to elect a new president

Luanda, Nov 17 (Prensa Latina) Angola's National Assembly (parliament) will elect a new president today during the first ordinary plenary session of the fourth legislative term.

On November 13, the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) party decided to appoint Adao de Almeida as president of Parliament, replacing Carolina Cerqueira.

In accordance with the Legislative Assembly’s rules of procedure, the proposal was submitted to that body, and the election of the new president, along with the handover ceremony, is scheduled for this Monday, according to the proposed agenda.

The MPLA, with 124 of the 220 seats in the Assembly, holds a majority, so a smooth vote is expected, even though the reasons for replacing Cerqueira, who had held the position since 2022, have not been made public.

According to Angolan law, the president of the National Assembly is elected for each legislative term, but can be replaced within that term at the initiative of the political party or coalition of parties on whose list they were elected.

Adao de Almeida, a member of the MPLA’s Political Bureau and Chief of Staff to the President from 2020 until November 14, has experience in various positions.

Parliament is also preparing to begin the second ordinary plenary session of the fourth legislative session of the current term today, during which the first debate on the draft General State Budget (PGE) for 2026 is scheduled to take place.
