Ecuador says No to Noboa, military bases, and Constituent Assembly

Quito, Nov 17 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador rejected the four questions in the referendum and popular consultation promoted by President Daniel Noboa, including those concerning foreign military bases and the Constituent Assembly, results that still seem surprising.

With more than 90 percent of the ballots counted, the National Electoral Council (CNE) confirmed that the “No” vote prevailed on all questions with a clear trend.

Polls did not foresee this scenario, nor did the president, who met with US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem the previous week, to tour strategic locations on the Ecuadorian coast.

Former President Rafael Correa (2007-2017) celebrated the referendum’s result as a historic validation of the current Constitution.

Correa affirmed, “The Montecristi Constitution has been ratified after 17 years in effect (…) For the first time in Ecuador’s history, a Constitution has been voted on mainly by citizens twice. This marks a historic milestone.”

Communicator and sociologist Irene Leon, of the Network of Intellectuals and Artists in Defense of Hurobity, emphasized that the Ecuadorian people want to continue “with one of the best Constitutions in the world, with sovereignty and without foreign military bases.”
