More than 800 Cambodian families displaced by border incident

Phnom Penh, Nov 17 (Prensa Latina) More than 800 Cambodian families remain sheltered in a Buddhist pagoda in Banteay Meanchey province after being displaced from their homes following the latest incident on the border with Thailand.

Local authorities and donors are providing essential humanitarian aid to hundreds of residents who fled to Wat Chan Sy Samaky Ratanaram sanctuary after a shooting in the village of Prey Chan, which left one person dead and three seriously injured.

While no further armed incidents were reported on November 13 and 14, authorities confirmed that the alert level remains high in Prey Chan and Chouk Chey, the Cambodian news agency AKP reported.

The same source quoted the provincial governor of Banteay Meanchey, Oum Reatrey, who stated that “the Royal Government will not allow any citizen to be in a vulnerable situation during this difficult time.”

Last Friday, the Permanent Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Sophea Eat, briefed the diplomatic corps accredited to the Kingdom, as well as representatives of international organizations, on the recent events on the Cambodia-Thailand border.

Sophea revealed that her country lodged a formal protest against the shooting carried out by Thai forces on the 12th and stressed that the illegitimate use of force also negatively impacted the ongoing demarcation work, as agreed upon by both parties in October.
