The initiative, scheduled to run until November 23, had its first edition in 2021 and has become a continental platform for political advocacy to boost the implementation of the AU’s revised policy on the subject.
It also underscores the interrelationship between peace, security, governance, human rights, and development, and constitutes a call for African solidarity and international cooperation in the reconstruction of societies emerging from conflict.
The Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, stated that this year’s theme, “Rebuilding Lives After Conflict Through Restorative Justice,” reaffirms the commitment to promoting concrete initiatives to improve the lives and livelihoods of Africans.
Youssouf further specified that he emphasizes the human dimension of peacebuilding, recognizing that sustainable recovery cannot be achieved without justice, dignity, and reparations for affected communities.
He added that he highlights the AU’s commitment to promoting inclusive, people-centered, and justice-based recovery processes that restore trust, address the aftermath of conflict, and lay the foundations for lasting peace and development.
