World Food Program warns of rising hunger in 2026

United Nations, Nov 19 (Prensa Latina) Global hunger is increasing today and by 2026 more than 318 million people will be affected, which figure is twice the number recorded in 2019, warned the World Food Programme (WFP).

According to this UN entity, one of the most critical years in terms of food security is approaching and the decrease in funding for humanitarian work will only allow it to assist 110 million of those who are in a more vulnerable situation, About one third of the total will need urgent support.

WFP reported that it requires $13 billion to help all those affected, but current projections indicate that it will receive only half of these resources.

“The world is dealing with simultaneous famines in Gaza and parts of Sudan. This is completely unacceptable in the 21st century,” said WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain.

She also warned that millions of lives are at risk as the problem worsens and solutions take time.

Among the factors influencing the worsening of the crisis, she mentioned conflicts, extreme weather events and economic instability.

According to WFP, $14.2 million of this total should be prioritized for direct assistance.
