Security Council supports Syrian unity

Damascus, Nov 20 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Security Council reiterated the need to protect the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Syria, while demanding an immediate end to Israeli violations, according to press reports here.

During a session on the situation in Syria, the Deputy Special Envoy of the Secretary-General, Najat Rochdi, stressed the urgency of halting Israeli incursions and called on the Council to act firmly against these transgressions.

She warned that the fragility of the security situation in Syria requires profound reforms, as well as effective disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration programs.

Rochdi also expressed the United Nations’ readiness to support transitional processes in the Arab nation, including work related to the People’s Assembly and the drafting of a new constitution, insisting on ensuring equitable representation for women and diverse Syrian communities.

The Russian representative, Vasily Nebenzya, stated that Syria is going through a delicate phase that requires resolving its internal affairs without external interference.

He condemned Israeli actions in the occupied Golan Heights and urged the Council to adopt measures to end these violations, as well as calling for the lifting of unilateral sanctions, which are worsening the economic situation and food security of millions of Syrians.

On behalf of the African Group, the Algerian ambassador, Amar Benjama, emphasized that all international support must respect national sovereignty.

He also condemned Israeli military operations in southern Syria and reiterated that the Golan Heights is an integral part of Syrian territory.
