The newspaper noted that the security cabinet held a meeting last night over the initiative, which was approved in its first reading by the Knesset (Parliament).

The source stated that during the meeting, Shin Bet security service chief David Zini described the legislation as a “highly effective deterrent.”

Meanwhile, the representative of the Armed Forces stated that “there is no obstacle to the law,” and Government Secretary Yossi Fox asserted that the main issue is “whether it is appropriate to introduce discretionary power and whether this penalty should not be mandatory.”

This last point was supported by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, known for his expansionist and anti-Arab stances.

Palestinian groups and NGOs have strongly condemned the first reading of the bill in the last few days.

Tel Aviv, 21 nov (Prensa Latina) El gobierno y el ejército israelí respaldaron un polémico proyecto de ley que permitiría ejecutar a prisioneros palestinos condenados por terrorismo y ataques mortales, una medida muy criticada en la región, reveló hoy el diario Yedioth Ahronoth.

El rotativo destacó que el gabinete de seguridad celebró anoche una reunión sobre la iniciativa, aprobada en primera lectura por la Knesset (Parlamento).

Según la fuente, durante el encuentro, el jefe del Shin Bet (la agencia de seguridad interior), David Zini, consideró la normativa como una “herramienta sumamente disuasoria”.

Mientras, el representante de las Fuerzas Armadas señaló que “no hay ningún obstáculo para la ley”, y el secretario del Gobierno, Yossi Fox, afirmó que la cuestión principal es “si no es correcto introducir su discrecionalidad y si esta pena no debería ser obligatoria”.

Este último punto fue respaldado por el ministro de Seguridad Nacional, Itamar Ben Gvir, conocido por sus posturas expansionistas y antiárabes.

En los últimos días, agrupaciones y ONG palestinas condenaron en duros términos la aprobación en primera lectura de ese plan.
