South African construction sector shows mixed results

Pretoria, Nov 21 (Prensa Latina) The private residential construction sector in South Africa experienced uneven performance during the first nine months of 2025, according to reports from local government institutions.

According to the national statistics agency, Stats SA, the total value of approved construction plans contracted by 2,5% in the January-September 2025 period compared to the same period of the previous year, equivalent to approximately US$98.7 million.

This decrease is mainly explained by the reduction in residential buildings (around US$102.1 million) and non-residential construction (approximately US$66.7 million), according to official data.

In contrast, the additions and renovations category showed positive growth, with an increase of approximately US$70.1 million compared to the same period in 2024.

Meanwhile, the value of buildings reported as completed experienced a slight year-over-year increase of 0,6%, equivalent to about US$11.4 million.

This growth was driven by the progress in residential construction (around US$54.6 million) and non-residential construction (approximately US$12.9 million).

However, completed additions and renovations registered a decrease of approximately US$56.1 million during the period analyzed.
