Marches in Uruguay to condemn violence against women

Montevideo, Nov 25 (Prensa Latina) Feminist groups march in Uruguay to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The date commemorates the assassination of the Mirabal sisters—Patria, Minerva, and Maria Teresa—in the Dominican Republic (1960) for their opposition to the regime of Rafael Trujillo.

This Uruguayan edition coincides almost exactly with the release of a report by the Ministry of the Interior documenting 35,443 complaints of domestic violence between January and October of this year.

According to the average, this equates to one complaint every 12 minutes and a 19 percent increase over the last decade.

As every year, there will be demonstrations in different parts of the country.

Under the slogan “Against all forms of violence: struggle and resistance,” the Via al 8M platform and the Feminist Coordinating Committee have called for a rally in Plaza Libertad in the capital.

There, a feminist intervention will take place, followed by a march to the esplanade of the University of the Republic, where a proclamation will be read.

Meanwhile, the Women in Black collective will seek to represent mourning and protest with their traditional silent march.

In turn, the Feminist Intersocial called for participation in the planned mobilizations and released a proclamation criticizing alleged government failures.
