Suspected fourth member of Louvre robbery gang arrested

Paris, Nov 25 (Prensa Latina) French police arrested the fourth suspected member of the group of thieves who stole eight jewels valued at 88 million euros from the Louvre Museum in Paris on October 19.

According to the press, the individual is being held at the headquarters of the Anti-Bandit Brigade on charges of organized robbery and criminal association, the same charges for which the other three suspected gang members have already been prosecuted.

Three other people, a man and two women, were arrested today, though the reasons for their arrests are not yet known.

On Sunday, October 19, four individuals broke into the Apollo Gallery of the Louvre through a window and stole necklaces, earrings, a corsage, and a tiara that belonged to Empresses Eugénie, Marie Louise of Austria, Marie Amelie, and Hortense. Despite the arrests and the evidence gathered at the crime scene, the world’s most famous and visited museum has so far failed to recover the precious loot, considered to be of inestimable heritage and historical value.

The theft has reignited the debate about vulnerabilities in the protection of cultural sites in France, particularly the Louvre, which houses more than half a million works of art, some 36,000 of which are on display.
