Lindbergh Farias, leader of the PT’s caucus in the Chamber of Deputies, wrote on his X profile, “For the first time in our history, we are witnessing the arrest of a former president of the Republic and generals for an attempted coup d’etat.”
Judge Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur for the case at the Supreme Federal Court (STF), ordered on Tuesday that the far-right former president remain in custody at the Federal Police (PT) headquarters in this capital, after his provisional arrest.
Bolsonaro had been under house arrest since August for violating precautionary measures and was detained on Saturday due to a possible escape attempt and his attempt to break his electronic ankle monitor.
The former president blamed the device breakage on hallucinations, an argument that De Moraes dismissed in his ruling on preventive detention.
Under this scenario, the investigating judge determined that Bolsonaro’s defense team had exhausted all resources and appeals against the conviction, and gave the green light for him to serve his prison sentence for attempting to subvert the constitutional order.
