Court ruling frees Bolivia from self-extended magistrates

La Paz, Nov 26 (Prensa Latina) Bolivia awoke today free of the five self-extended magistrates of the Plurinational Constitutional Court (TCP) after the First Constitutional Chamber of the Departmental Court of Justice of Potosi ordered their immediate dismissal.

The judicial authority also ordered the suspension of their salaries and arranged for immediate protection to ensure they vacate their offices.

According to the court ruling, “the First Constitutional Chamber grants the protection requested by Sandra Beatriz Aiza Soto and, consequently, orders that the payment of salaries to the magistrates in question be cessated.”

Furthermore, the affected authorities were instructed to vacate their positions at the TCP, with the assistance of administrative staff and the presence of legally designated authorities to verify the inventory of assets under their custody, as indicated in the public action.

The Constitutional Chamber of Potosi convened a hearing to address the situation of the five self-extended magistrates of the Constitutional Court and the two extended magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice, whose mandates were extended by a Plurinational Constitutional Decree issued on December 11, 2023.

In this way, they prolonged until this Tuesday the six-year term granted to them by the Constitution, which was set to end on January 2, 2024.
