Kamchatka’s Bezymyanny volcano spews ash column

Moscow, Nov 26 (Prensa Latina) The Bezymyanny volcano in Kamchatka erupted, spewing an ash column seven kilometers high, the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported today.

According to the scientific body’s statement, published this Wednesday on its Telegram channel, the Bezymyanny eruption occurred at 5:20 a.m. (Moscow time), and the ash column extended approximately 150 kilometers east of the volcano.

In response, authorities on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula declared an orange alert for air safety, considering the volcanic activity a threat to local air transport.

Volcanologists warn of the possibility of an explosive eruption that could expel ash up to 15 kilometers high and cause ashfall in populated areas.

Bezymyanny volcano is located in the central part of the Klyuchevskaya volcanic group, 40 kilometers from the town of Klyuchi and 350 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the capital of that Russian region.

Similarly, the Russian Academy of Sciences reported that 10 significant earthquakes, with a magnitude of seven on the Richter scale, occurred in Kamchatka in the last 24 hours, and warned residents of a possible tsunami.
