Two people killed in attacks in southern Syria

Damascus, Nov 26 (Prensa Latina) Two people were killed in acts of violence in the southern governorate of Sweida, the Syrian Interior Ministry reported.

According to the ministry, armed insurgents attacked a security checkpoint in the area, killing one officer and wounding two others.

In a statement released on its Telegram channel, the ministry specified that units deployed in the area returned fire, inflicting casualties on the attackers.

The ministry warned that actions of this kind seek to undermine stability and disrupt the lives of civilians, and reiterated its commitment to confronting those who threaten public safety anywhere in the country. Meanwhile, local sources in Sweida reported a drone attack on a vehicle in the same province, an incident that resulted in one death and five injuries.

The escalation of violence in Sweida dates back to last July, following incidents of reciprocal kidnappings between Bedouin residents and members of the Druze community in the al-Muqawwas neighborhood, which led to clashes.

Government intervention was accompanied by allegations of rape against Druze civilians, triggering local reprisals and the subsequent withdrawal of government forces after Israeli airstrikes.

Later, a US-brokered agreement between Damascus and Israel sought to halt hostilities and contain further tensions in the area.
