UN: 610 million children live in violent homes

New York, Nov 27 (Prensa Latina) Some 610 million children worldwide suffer intimate partner violence against their mothers, according to a new UN report.

More than half of the children in Oceania and around a third in sub-Saharan Africa and Central and South Asia live in homes marked by violence, the report by the children’s agency UNICEF warns.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, the figure reaches 35 million minors.

UNICEF points out that one in four children worldwide—around 610 million—lives with a mother who has experienced physical, emotional, or sexual violence from her partner in the last twelve months.

The study is published alongside new global estimates on violence against women released by the World Health Organization (WHO).

These figures confirm that more than 10% of women aged 15 and over suffered physical or sexual violence from their partner in the past year.

The data show that this often invisible form of violence is a daily reality in millions of homes and a persistent threat to children’s development and well-being, the UN warns.
