Bolsonaro’s party suspends his salary after imprisonment

Brasilia, Nov 28 (Prensa Latina) Brazil's conservative Liberal Party (PL) has suspended Jair Bolsonaro's salary after the former president began serving his more than 27-year sentence in pretrial detention for attempted coup, it was learned.

Bolsonaro had been receiving 46,300 reais per month (almost nine thousand dollars) as honorary president of the political organization since April 2023, three months after leaving office.

This remuneration will remain suspended until he completes his sentence for the coup attempt.

“Unfortunately, due to Law 9.096/1995 and the suspension of the political rights of our honorary president, Jair Bolsonaro, the respective party activities of our leader will also be suspended, including his remuneration,” the PL explained.

According to the partial report submitted to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), the party paid Bolsonaro 402,500 reais (US$75,000) this year through the end of October.

In addition to the 46,300 reais transferred as “technical-professional services,” which netted 33,800 reais (a little over US$6,000), the PL transferred 99,400 reais (US$18,500) to the former president for “other expenses” in February.

Along with losing his salary, the former head of State will be barred from running for any office until the 2060 elections.

Since the Clean Record Law requires an eight-year disqualification period after serving a sentence, the former Army captain will have his political rights suspended for 35 years and three months.

He was already barred from holding office until 2030 due to two convictions by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) for abuse of political power.

Bolsonaro began serving his sentence for the coup d’état on Tuesday, when the Supreme Federal Court upheld the conviction.
