Brazil: Former military police chiefs tried in court for coup attempt

Brasilia, Nov 28 (Prensa Latina) Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) has scheduled the trial for today against former chiefs of the Federal District Military Police (PM-DF) for the coup attempt of January 8, 2023.

Shouting “general cleansing” and to the sound of national anthems, a large group of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro’s parties invaded the Esplanade of Ministries in the capital on that date to protest the results of the 2022 elections, which were won by President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The extremists, who were calling for military intervention, were labeled terrorists and entered the National Congress building under a barrage of tear gas.

The trial for this Friday was scheduled twice, but was removed from the agenda at the request of the rapporteur, Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

The last time was on August 6.

The Attorney General’s Office accuses the former heads of the PM-DF (Metropolitan Police of the Federal District) of negligence in their actions during the anti-democratic events.

The trial is being held in a virtual plenary session from 11:00 AM local time until December 5.

According to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, the officers allegedly colluded with the protesters camped out in Brasília and failed to fulfill their constitutional duties of protection and surveillance.
