The measure was approved by a two-to-one majority among the three members of the legislative body, which analyzed the issue for the second time this year, following a similar proposal in September by the Attorney General’s Office in response to criminal charges against the president, Teletica.com added.
Congresswomen Alejandra Larios, of the National Liberation Party and president of the committee, and Rocio Alfaro, of the Broad Front, voted in favor of lifting the immunity, while Daniel Vargas, a member of the ruling party, voted against it, thus ratifying the recommendation before the full Congress.
The Legislative Assembly body formalized its decision in a report, based on complaints from the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) regarding the alleged political belligerence of the president, and materialized in public statements about the electoral process prior to the 2026 elections, which are considered illegal in the country, the television station added.
