In an interview with the newspaper L’Altravoce, published today on the Foreign Ministry’s official website, Tajani stated that “NATO is based on two pillars, one American and one European, and we Europeans have a duty to strengthen our contribution.”
“Italy also plays an important role in this,” the Minister emphasized, adding that, to achieve a balance of power with the Americans within this military alliance, Europeans “need a military force that is difficult to overcome.”
“To establish parity, we need to strengthen our defense,” but this is difficult within the European Union (EU) because “each European Foreign Ministry acts independently.”
For this reason, as part of EU reforms, “we are in favor of eliminating unanimity, as it risks paralyzing Europe,” he asserted, referring to the current voting system within the regional community, which requires the agreement of all member states to approve decisions in sensitive political areas.
These include foreign and security policy, as well as fiscal matters and the approval of new EU accessions.
Regarding the current conflict in Ukraine, the Italian Foreign Minister stated in the interview that “we must work to end the war that has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths.”
