Chile: Former Foreign Ministers concerned on Kast’s threats to migran

Santiago, Chile, Dec 1 (Prensa Latina) A group of former Chilean foreign ministers expressed their deep concern over threats made by far-right presidential candidate José Antonio Kast to expel and imprison migrants en masse.

The former ministers stated that migration policy must be framed within the rule of law and the international obligations assumed by the country regarding humanitarian matters, refugees, and the protection of vulnerable individuals.

“Proposals based on the threat of mass expulsions, the separation of families, or confinement in quasi-prison facilities are incompatible with respect for human dignity and international and regional human rights standards,” they emphasized.

The signatories added that Chile has a fundamental interest in preserving respectful, cooperative, and neighborly relations with Peru and Bolivia, and therefore the idea of forcing thousands of people into neighboring states is an unfriendly gesture. D

During the debate at the First Social Forum, the Republican Party’s presidential candidate stated that the hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants had 104 days left to leave the country, and if they failed to do so, they would have to leave with only the clothes on their backs.

“Chile has a duty to strengthen border controls and regulate migration flows, but candidate Kast’s proposals, which aim to indiscriminately expel around 350,000 people, lack logistical and financial support,” the text warns.

Furthermore, they maintain that the current migration situation in northern Chile “demands firm but viable solutions, agreed upon with neighboring countries and consistent with international law, not rhetorical pronouncements that promise simple solutions to complex problems.”
