Sponsored by the Office of Latin America and the Caribbean of the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the event commemorated the first anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba.
This performance comes at a time when both cultures are seeking to take a new leap forward, stated the director of the Office, Jooil Lee.
The official added that his country appreciates the vibrant rhythms of Cuban music, and that this, along with Cuban culture, history, tradition, and people, will continue to be a valuable link between the two nations. m
Special guests at the event included the Cuban ambassador to South Korea, Claudio Monzon, and the 20 members of the Korea-Cuba Dream Supporters youth cultural exchange program.
The Cuban group, comprised of brothers Diego and Fabio Abreu (piano, drums) and Roberto Álvarez (bass), performed five original pieces and an arrangement by renowned artist Benny More, alongside Yaroldy Abreu.
From South Korea, Jungmin Seo, who plays the 25-string gayageum, was a standout, accompanied by percussionists Byungwook You and Seonggeun Kim.
Following the solo performances, the Cuban and Korean musicians played the compositions “La Peruana,” “Honeyed Holly,” and “Musical Journey from Havana to Seoul” for the audience. This last work intertwines South Korean lyrical melodies with the distinctive language of Cuban music, opening a new musical horizon that elevates and enriches each artist’s expression.
