Mexican Senate approves General Water Law

Mexico City, Dec 5 (Prensa Latina) The Mexican Senate approved the draft decree that enacts the General Water Law and amends several provisions of the National Water Law, aimed at returning this resource to the nation.

Approved in general with 85 votes in favor and 36 against, the proposal received in particular the support from 82 parliamentarians and was rejected by 34.

Sent by the Chamber of Deputies, the bill stems from an initiative by President Claudia Sheinbaum, so that water is no longer seen as a commodity and to combat its misuse, theft, and the black market.

The Senate noted that the bill, sent to the Federal Executive, establishes the foundations, supports, and procedures for access to equitable and sustainable use of water resources, as well as their interdependence with other human rights.

The document promotes, respects, protects, and guarantees the right to water for personal and domestic consumption, access, disposal, and sanitation, in accordance with the Constitution and the international treaties to which this North American nation is a party.
