The Ethiopian Minister of Education, Behanu Nega, met with Yu Yunfeng, Director General of the Education and Language Cooperation Center of the Ministry of Education in Beijing, where they focused on strengthening cooperation in the education between the two BRICS member states.
Yunfeng highlighted the long-standing ties between the two nations and described Addis Ababa as a “strategic partner of China.”
He specified that China seeks to expand Chinese language teaching beyond the limited programs currently offered at select universities.
“This would not only allow citizens to learn several languages, but would also significantly contribute to strengthening cooperation between our peoples,” he stated.
Nega, for his part, expressed the Ministry’s interest in expanding the reach of Chinese language teaching. He noted that while the programs have already begun at some universities, they need to be extended to other institutions, including five new federal high schools opening this academic year.
He also requested China’s support in providing qualified teachers.
