Syrian President reveals ongoing negotiations with Israel

Damascus, Dec. 6 (Prensa Latina) Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shara revealed that negotiations are underway with Israel aimed at achieving the withdrawal of its forces from the territories occupied over the past year.

According to Syrian media reports, the president stated that any agreement must fully guarantee the interests of Syria, which has been the target of systematic attacks by Israeli forces.

In this context, Al-Shara questioned the proposal to establish a demilitarized zone, warning that it raises “fundamental questions,” including who would guarantee the area’s protection in the absence of the Syrian army.

The head of State renmembered that Syria, since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2014, has sent “positive messages” aimed at strengthening regional stability.

However, he stated that Israel has responded with extreme violence, carrying out more than a thousand airstrikes and around 400 ground incursions into Syrian territory.

Al-Shara denounced Israel for continuing to export its domestic crises to other countries in the region and evading responsibility for the massacres committed in the Gaza Strip, hiding behind the argument of “security concerns.”

The president pointed out that Damascus is working with influential countries in the international community to pressure Tel Aviv to withdraw its forces from the occupied territories after December 8, 2014, a demand that—he asserted—has broad international support, to never forget the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.
