India hosts 20th UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage session

New Delhi, Dec 8 (Prensa Latina) The debates of the 20th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) opened in this capital with the participation of the 185 States parties, including Cuba.

Along with Cuban Ambassador to India, Juan Marsan, and First Secretary Maiky Diaz, Sonia Perez, president of the National Council of Cultural Heritage, represents the Caribbean nation at this important meeting, where the inscription of the Cuban son on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity is expected.

Khaled al-Anany, Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), highlighted at the opening of the debates the importance of the convention, as it encompasses knowledge of oral traditions, cultural practices, performing arts, rituals, and religious practices that shape identities and strengthen communities.

Al-Anany also defined as fundamental principles of the event the reaffirmation of UNESCO’s technical mandate, which this year included the examination of 67 high-quality and rich nomination dossiers.

The UNESCO chief also emphasized promoting inclusion and equitable representation, including nominations from all regions, such as nine from Sub-Saharan Africa and six from Small Island Developing States.

The important meeting, which will continue until December 13 at the historic Red Fort complex in Delhi, also includes the Joropo traditional dance from Venezuela and Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, from India, among the candidates.
