Accompanied by the First Secretary of the Cuban Embassy in India, Maiky Diaz, the official received the diploma from Fumiko Ohinata, Director of the Secretariat of the 2003 UNESCO Convention.
Yesterday, the practice of Cuban Son was included on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a recognition of this expression of the culture and identity of the Cuban people.
With this decision, announced at the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO in New Delhi, the Cuban government’s commitment to protecting the traditions that represent the roots of the Caribbean nation is also highlighted.
After the decision was announced, the president of the National Council for Cultural Heritage, Sonia Perez, stated that the news would be celebrated as a well-deserved tribute to the creativity and joy of an entire people.
