Italy: Protesters condemn US aggression against Venezuela

Rome, Dec 11 (Prensa Latina) Thousands of demonstrators protested in Italy the intensification of the United States' aggressive policy toward Venezuela and the threat of military attacks on that Latin American nation, a release states on Thursday.

The large-scale mobilization held on Wednesday, convened by political, social, and student organizations in this nation, included demonstrations in several of the country’s most important cities, among them Rome, Milan, Turin, Bologna, and Bari, with the slogan “Hands off Venezuela!”, a spokesperson noted.

Economist Luciano Vasapollo, co-founder of the Italian chapter of the Network of Intellectuals in Defense of Humanity, told Il Faro di Roma newspaper, “We mobilized at universities throughout Italy with actions for the International Day of Solidarity with the Venezuelan People and the Bolivarian Republic.”

The protests were held outside the US Embassy in Rome and the US consulates in several cities, where demonstrators reaffirmed that “we will always support socialist and Bolivarian Venezuela, without ambiguity, and stand against imperialist aggression,” he stated.

Vasapollo, who is also the leader of the Network of Communists, considered that this initiative, which “stems from the understanding that what is happening to Caracas is not an isolated incident, but part of a global strategy,” was “a great political and activist success,” as it managed to “unite universities, the streets, and social movements.”

The organizers indicated in their call for the protests that the White House’s foreign policy aims “to restore US preeminence in the Western Hemisphere to once again turn Latin America into the backyard of imperialism, reinstating the so-called Monroe Doctrine.”
