Myanmar strengthens measures against drug trafficking

Yangon, Dec 11 (Prensa Latina) Myanmar authorities reviewed strategies today to curb drug trafficking and production in the country at a meeting of the Central Committee for Narcotics Prevention and Control.

During the meeting, global drug-related threats were discussed, and data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime was cited, reporting 316 million drug users worldwide in 2023.

The impact of narcotics trafficking on transnational crime, terrorism, and national security was highlighted, with an emphasis on insurgent groups and the smuggling of chemicals.

In this regard, the authorities reviewed ongoing eradication efforts, which include joint operations between the military, police, and local communities to destroy poppy fields.

Consequently, the authorities stressed the need for stricter controls on chemical imports and greater coordination with neighboring countries and international organizations.
