Catherine Russell, Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), who visited the African country, noted that more than 30 million people in Sudan need humanitarian assistance.
Russell emphasized that millions of children are trapped in besieged and hard-to-reach areas, especially in the Darfur and Kordofan regions, where food, water, and medical supplies are scarce.
The official also reported that families attempting to flee face dangerous routes, and those who reach safer areas are often malnourished, sick, and distressed.
Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in an internal war, following a power struggle between Army Chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
