Venezuelan FM questions Türk’s credibility

Caracas, Dec 17 (Prensa Latina) Foreign Minister Yvan Gil reportedly questioned the credibility of the supposed report presented by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, on Venezuela.

The high-ranking diplomat affirmed on his Telegram channel that there is a “worrying distancing of the UN system from the genuine defense of human rights.”

Gil pointed out that this aligns more with the interests of powerful nations that condition their funding on political favors, thus jeopardizing the fundamental principles established in the United Nations Charter.

The foreign minister stated that it is a moral obligation to strongly reject the actions made by the High Commissioner, who, while ignoring the United States’ attack on a Venezuelan oil tanker, “draws up a report riddled with falsehoods that adds to the attacks on our country.”

Gil noted that this situation not only undermines the credibility of the UN but also discredits its commitment to justice and equity in the international arena.

Addressing the forum in Geneva, Venezuela’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Alexander Yanez, told Turk that “credibility is the fundamental key to defending human rights.”
