The Government reached preliminary approval for the 2026 Budget, the first of the Milei era, but suffered a key defeat: the opposition managed to completely overturn Chapter 11, which revoked university funding and the disability emergency declaration, two laws that the ruling party insists on violating.
After a session that began at 2:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday and concluded early this morning, the executive’s allied leaders offered concessions of all kinds to governors and allied blocs to protect the entire chapter.
However, at the time of the vote, they only garnered 117 affirmative votes, while the opposition obtained 123 rejections and also added two abstentions.
This is the third time in six months that the government has lost on university funding and the disability emergency, counting the original passage of the laws, the legislative revocation of the presidential veto, and now the attempted repeal via the budget.
A majority of deputies also rejected eliminating the automatic adjustments to the Universal Child Allowance and other family allowances.
Deputy Cecilia Moreu celebrated this opposition victory on X. “They tried to play dirty, and it backfired.”
