China rejects new US military sale plan to Taiwan

Beijing, Dec 18 (Prensa Latina) China rejected on Thursday the United States' announcement of a plan to sell advanced weapons to Taiwan and questioned Japan's military reinforcement in Okinawa, arguing that it affects regional peace and stability.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that the US decision violates the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, and also damages the country’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.

Guo noted that such actions send the wrong signals to separatist forces advocating for “Taiwan independence” and undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

The spokesperson underscored that external support for secession “will only backfire on those who promote it” and reiterated that using Taiwan to contain China will not succeed.

He added that the Taiwan issue is at the core of China’s fundamental interests and the first red line that must not be crossed in bilateral relations with the United States.

Both positions come amid a diplomatic crisis between Beijing and Tokyo, which has escalated following statements made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan.
