Specialized clinic in Cuba for post-chikungunya care opens

Havana, December 23 (Prensa Latina) Patients with post-chikungunya ailments, especially those associated with neuropathic pain, joint pain, and paresthesia, now have access to a specialized clinic offering comprehensive care and, based on medical criteria, access to CT scans, ultrasounds, and other diagnostic procedures.

This is a unique initiative in the country, led by the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery, to provide comprehensive care to these patients. This includes specialized medical evaluation, imaging studies, physical therapy, and pain relief interventions when necessary.

This was announced by the director of the institution, Dr. Orestes Lopez, in a statement published by the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP). He specified that, in cases where required, anesthetic interventions will be administered for pain management, as well as physical therapy treatments aimed at improving quality of life and functional recovery.

The health facility, located in Havana’s Vedado neighborhood, is prepared to treat those affected, although it is unknown how many people will seek care at this specialized clinic, he emphasized.

Cuba has been facing the transmission of the chikungunya virus since mid-year, initially as a localized outbreak in the western province of Matanzas, and later spreading to almost the entire country, becoming an epidemic.
