Population aging affects Italy’s economic growth

Rome, Dec 28 (Prensa Latina) The rapid aging of Italy's population is a ticking time bomb for the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth.

According to study released on the website of the specialized publication Borsa & Finanza ir US highlighted the serious economic problem posed by the shrinking workforce in this European nation, where by 2050, one in three residents will be over 65 years old, and the average age will increase from the current 46.6 to 51 years.

Furthermore, in 25 years, Italy will have approximately four million fewer inhabitants.

Currently home to around 59 million people, the population is increasingly aging, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (Istat), as highlighted in the report by analyst Alessandro Zoppo.

The report, based on a recent European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) report on the 2025-26 Transition, highlights that in Italy, rising survival rates, low birth rates, and changing family structures—with 41.1% of future single-person households—will lead to labor shortages.

Experts warn that Italy will face unmet labor demand, which migration flows, linked to economic and geopolitical dynamics, will not be able to offset.
