Etsegenet Mengistu, Chairperson of Legal and Justice Affairs Standing Committee of the House of People’s Representatives (Parliament), commented in a briefing that these agreements signify Addis Ababa’s growing diplomatic influence and its commitment to international regulations. The meeting provided a platform for experts and legislators to analyze the frameworks and ensure their alignment with the nation’s sovereign interests and legal integrity.
The analysis included the two agreements with China, focusing on the transfer of convicted persons and mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.
Meanwhile, with Brazil, the Committee examined a bilateral treaty on the repatriation of convicted persons, along with a formal extradition agreement with South Africa for citizens sought for criminal prosecution.
The Committee underscored that these measures are intended to create a solid legal framework for addressing transnational crimes and managing the exchange of detainees with greater transparency.
