Uruguayan customs increases seizures in combating smuggling

Montevideo, Dec 30 (Prensa Latina) The National Customs Directorate (DNA) carried out approximately 5,000 seizures between January and November of this year, it was revealed.

The DNA seized various contraband goods, vehicles, suspicious packages, and counterfeit items worth more than 1.4 billion pesos (just over 36 million dollars).

This figure surpasses the total for 2024, a record year for Customs in terms of the value of seizures.

There was also an increase of more than 70% in the average value per successful operation, compared to last year’s data.

Regarding contraband cigarettes, seizures to date have exceeded last year’s figures by more than 80%.

In the fight against drug trafficking, 35 drug seizures of varying significance took place, most of them at Carrasco International Airport.

The National Customs Directorate (DNA) indicated that it is making the necessary adjustments for the implementation, on January 1st, of changes to the annual duty-free allowance system and the collection of VAT on postal shipments from countries without trade agreements signed with Uruguay.
