Alfredo Guevara, a cultural legacy in Cuba and Latin America

Havana, Dec 31 (Prensa Latina) Cuba celebrates the 100th birthday of the intellectual and filmmaker Alfredo Guevara (1925-2013), whose work and thought left a profound mark on the culture of his country and Latin America.

His revolutionary trajectory began at the University of Havana, where he studied Philosophy and Letters and established a lasting friendship with the historic Cuban leader, Fidel Castro.

After the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, he founded and directed the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC).

From there, Guevara boosted a comprehensive cultural movement that transcended film. He founded the Cine Cubano magazine and the Latin American ICAIC Newsreel, directed by Santiago Alvarez.

He created the Cuban Film Archive in 1960 and fostered the exceptional development of film posters.

He was also the founder of the Grupo de Experimentacion Sonora del ICAIC, a breeding ground for the Cuban Nueva Trova Movement.

One of his most cherished achievements was the creation of the Havana International New Latin American Film Festival, inaugurated on December 3, 1979, whose first edition brought together more than 600 filmmakers.
