Ecuador’s Citizen Revolution prepares national convention

Quito, Jan 7 (Prensa Latina) The Citizen Revolution (RC) movement, the main opposition force in Ecuador, is preparing to hold a national convention on January 17 and 18, where members will elect a new leadership.

The meeting will take place in the city of Manta, although there will be virtual participation, with delegates registered through the AppRC5 digital platform.

Amid internal disputes, several names are being considered to assume the leadership of the political group founded by former President Rafael Correa.

Currently, former presidential candidate Luisa González leads the movement.

The movement’s internal election has gained importance following the withdrawal of former minister Felipe Vega de la Cuadra, who withdrew from the race due to “persecution and threats,” as he stated.

Correa, for his part, announced his support for Gabriela Rivadeneira, former president of the National Assembly from 2013 to 2017 and a refugee in Mexico since 2020, as the party’s presidential candidate.

In addition to Rivadeneira, other activists, such as journalist Orlando Perez, have emerged within the movement as potential leaders after the convention.

Quito Mayor Pabel Munoz, a member of the RC, stated that he has high hopes for the convention.

“Time is demanding that we sit down, meet, have a closed discussion, and allow that debate to be as heated as it needs to be, so that we can then arrive at a unified position,” Munoz said.
