Guatemala maintains surveillance of H3N2 influenza

Guatemala City, Jan 7 (Prensa Latina) Guatemala is maintaining its surveillance of the H3N2 K variant of influenza A, focusing on the upcoming return to school and the arrival of visitors from regions, especially Europe, where the virus is circulating.

The Ministry of Health and Social Prevention (MSPAS) confirmed that the alert issued on December 16 remains in effect, while noting a possible risk of an increase in cases of the disease in the coming weeks.

The Ministry has ruled out any new reports of the so-called “super flu” since the 24-year-old woman confirmed on January 19. This flu typically intensifies during the cold season and can extend into February.

However, the Ministry added that it is working to strengthen early detection and prevent a resurgence of infections in the country through active epidemiological surveillance throughout the territory. The head of the Pediatric Emergency Department at the Roosevelt Hospital in the capital, Ricardo Menendez, told local media that the few cases of influenza detected during the end-of-year festivities were brought under control.

In 2025, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) was the predominant virus, in addition to some patients with Covid-19, described a doctor from one of the main public healthcare centers in the country.

The Epidemiology Department of another important hospital in the city, the San Juan de Dios General Hospital, reported that between December 24 and January 4, they treated six cases of influenza: three adults and three children, which does not represent an unusual increase.
