Amid shouts of military intervention and rejection of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s assumption of power, radical supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed and looted the buildings of the National Congress, the Supreme Federal Court (STF), and the Presidential Palace on January 8, 2023.
Those arrested for the violent acts were charged with the crimes of violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, coup d’état, armed criminal association, aggravated damage, and damage to declared heritage sites.
More than 800 people have been convicted by the end of 2025 for their participation in the coup attempts (including sentences in various legal proceedings).
The Supreme Federal Court (STF) also ordered the payment of a 30 million reais fine (approximately six million dollars), to be divided among all the defendants, for collective damages.
Official sources reported that the event at the Planalto Palace, the seat of the Executive Branch in the capital, is not expected to bring together the leadership of the National Congress or have a significant representation of STF justices.
The objective of the ceremony is to defend democracy and Brazilian institutions, and to reaffirm that what happened in 2023 cannot be forgotten.
