A statement released in the capital also acknowledged the efforts made by Colombian authorities to guarantee a smooth and secure process “that further contributes to strengthening democracy and consolidating peace in the country.”
It also highlighted the role of the new Congress in advancing the cause of peace, with the inclusion of the voices of victims elected under the Final Peace Agreement to occupy the 16 “peace seats” in regions marked by the armed conflict.
The document also condemned all attacks on the electoral process that occurred in the period leading up to the elections and acknowledged the authorities’ work in addressing the risks, especially in conflict-affected areas.
It also called to redouble efforts to ensure that the upcoming presidential elections can be held in a free and secure environment.
Colombians voted on Sunday to elect 102 senators, 100 of whom were chosen in a national constituency through lists competing nationwide, while two special seats are reserved for indigenous communities.
