Cuba participates in Al Khwarizmi International Olympiad, Uzbekistan

Tahskent, June 6 (Prensa Latina) A Cuban team is participating for the first time in the 4th Al Khwarizmi International Olympiad of Mathematics and Informatics (KhIMIO 2026), being held in Tahskent, Uzbekistan.

The Caribbean nation is attending with a team of eight ninth and tenth graders (under 15 and a half years old), organized into two teams of four members each: one for Mathematics and the other for Informatics, Prensa Latina learned.

The Mathematics team is made up of students Lianny Pineda, from the Ernesto Guevara Pre-University of Exact Sciences in Villa Clara; Yaislier Rojas, from the Federico Engels Pre-University in Pinar del Río; and Adrian Dario Pena, from the Eusebio Olivera Pre-University in Sancti Spiritus and Alejandro Martinez, from Maximo Gomez High School in Camaguey.

The Computer Science team is made up of Mauricio Cruz and Andy Ernesto Sanchez, both from the Ernesto Guevara Pre-University Institute in Villa Clara; Marcos Ramon, from the Vladimir Ilich Lenin High School in Cienfuegos; and Luis Angel Delgado, from the Jose Maceo High School in Guantanamo.

The teams are led by their respective coaches: Leonides Rodriguez (Computer Science, professor at the University of Exact Sciences) and Carlos Rafael Sebrango (Mathematics, from the University of Sancti Spiritus).

The official opening ceremony was held on Tuesday. The schedule of activities includes two days of competition (June 3 and 4), with the awards ceremony taking place on June 6.

Despite this being the first time Cuban students have participated in an event of this height, the coaches believe the teams have received excellent training and will all strive for strong results in the competition.
