Peru holds runoff with doubts and no predictions about outcome

Lima, Jun 7 (Prensa Latina) More than 27 million Peruvians are voy ING for a presidential runoff between two opposing projects: neoliberal Keiko Fujimori and progressive Roberto Sanchez, when recent polls pointed at a dead heat.

Amid the anxiety and tension surrounding the close race, polls compiled by the international press, for publication only abroad, agree that the decision will be dictated by undecided voters.

In that context, which makes a precise prediction impossible, Fujimori ratified, in her last press briefing, the validity of having expanded her government plan in consensus with at least five parties that competed in the crowded first round.

She explained that the coalition’s objectives include what she called democratic recovery in the face of its cuts by the Fujimori party, Fuerza Popular (Popular Force-FP), and its allies in Parliament, for which she intends to further broaden its political and social foundation.

Sanchez optimistically told foreign correspondents that he is eager for Sunday and the runoff to arrive “so I can get to work.”

Fujimori, in turn, has made “order versus chaos” the central theme of her campaign, promising to govern as her father, Alberto, did, whose government (1990-2000) stabilized the economy and defeated armed groups, but at the same time was marked by human rights violations and corruption.

For her fourth attempt at being elected president, Fujimori also opted for a conciliatory message, which, along with the vote being split among 35 candidates, allowed her to secure first place in the first round with 17 percent of the vote, compared to Sanchez’s 12 percent.
