The UN agency’s annual report, cited by SANA, stated that this figure makes Syria one of the world’s leading destinations for refugees returning to their country.
The document specified that this figure contributed to reducing the total number of Syrian refugees worldwide, which stood at 4.9 million in late 2025, compared to nearly six million in 2024.
UNHCR highlighted that the Arab country experienced one of the largest waves of return during the period analyzed, with a significant increase compared to 2024, when repatriation levels were considerably lower.
The UN agency explained that this development is part of a broader global trend, in which some 14.7 million refugees and internally displaced persons returned to their places of origin in 2025, representing a 50 percent increase compared to the previous year and the second-highest figure since 1965.
