Today marks the 121st anniversary of the death in Havana of Maximo Gomez, who represents the brotherhood between the Dominican and Cuban peoples,” said the diplomatic mission on its social media.
The embassy also evoked a statement made by Fidel Castro during his visit to Santo Domingo in 1998.
“There was a fact that remained indelibly etched in the soul of our people: the participation of the Dominicans in the struggle for our independence, and the role of that brilliant son of this country who was Maximo Gomez, who came to become one of the most extraordinary figures in our history,” said the statesman.
In turn, the Maximo Gomez Foundation has called for this Wednesday a tribute in honor of the Generalísimo in the park that bears his name in Bani, Peravia province.
In the same place, between trees, there is a replica of the modest house where the Dominican military strategist was born.
The building, with guano roof and earth floor, was inaugurated on November 18, 2016 to mark its 180th birthday.
In Cuba, Gomez demonstrated his talent as a military strategist during the Ten Years’ War (1868-1878) and in the Necessary War started in 1895.
He considered Cuba his adopted homeland and became an example of humility, boldness and courage.
Fidel Castro expressed on numerous occasions his admiration for the Generalissimo, whose human values, spirit of brotherhood and contributions to Cuban independence always stood out.
“Maximo Gomez knew how to become a distinguished and endearing son of the Cuban people, by right won in their struggle for independence of Cuba, to which he contributed with his arm and his machete, his military genius and his courage, a remarkable political talent and a profound revolutionary thought”, the leader of the Revolution asserted.
This was expressed on August 22, 1998, when he received the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sánchez and Mella in the degree Gran Cruz Placa de Oro, awarded by the then Dominican president Leonel Fernandez.
