Reports indicate that more than 370,000 Syrian refugees have returned

Damascus, Jun 18 (Prensa Latina) More than 370,000 Syrian citizens have voluntarily returned to their country through border crossings with Lebanon, the General Authority of Customs and Border Control reported today.

According to data released by the institution, approximately 125,000 people entered through the Jdeidet Yabous border crossing, one of the main entry points from Lebanese territory.

Border authorities did not provide further details about the profile of those returning or the logistical conditions of their return, although they emphasized that the process is entirely voluntary.

Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) explained in a report that approximately 1.3 million Syrians returned home from abroad during 2025, contributing to a reduction in the overall number of Syrian refugees to around 4.9 million by the end of the year, down from nearly six million in 2024.

The UNHCR detailed that Syria experienced one of the largest waves of return globally in the past year, with a volume almost three times higher than in 2024, in a context marked by political changes following the fall of the former regime in December 2024.

Globally, the UN agency estimated that around 14.7 million refugees and internally displaced persons returned to their places of origin in 2025, the second-highest figure since comparable records began, with Syria among the six countries with the highest proportion of returns, along with Afghanistan, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ukraine, and Myanmar.
