Sheinbaum received King Felipe VI of Spain at the National Palace, in the context of “a visit that reaffirms the historical and cultural ties between both countries,” the Foreign Secretariat noted, and described the dialogue as cordial and respectful.
The diplomatic institution stated that the president and the monarch agreed on the importance of deepening a relationship based on the closeness between their peoples, as well as on shared principles, values, and interests.
Sheinbaum highlighted Spain’s recent gestures in favor of recognizing indigenous peoples (following a period of distancing stemming from the European nation’s stance on the issue) and exchanged perspectives with her counterpart on the importance and cultural richness of these populations.
“This visit represents a new stage of dialogue and respect between Mexico and Spain, which will commemorate 50 years since the reestablishment of their diplomatic relations in 2027.”
King Felipe’s visit comes after Sheinbaum participated in the 4th Summit in Defense of Democracy in Barcelona, Spain, in April.
