Speaking on behalf of the group, the representative of Turkiye remembered that during the General Assembly’s last debate on this issue—held in October 2025—they had urged the lifting of this measure, which has remained in force for over six decades.
During its address at this 80th session, the OIC highlighted recent developments that have resulted in a tightening of the blockade, as well as the urgent need to address the humanitarian situation caused by US actions.
Any attempt to intensify sanctions against the Cuban people runs counter to the principles and purposes of the United Nations, the Islamic organization emphasized.
It remarked that this situation is regrettable, as it goes against the promotion of friendly relations between states and the guarantee of their citizens’ well-being.
This persists, it asserted, despite the overwhelming message sent by UN General Assembly members on previous occasions.
The organization stated that the US blockade affects not only Cuba’s commercial sector and domestic economic activities but has also had disastrous humanitarian consequences for the island’s entire population.
It noted that, due to these measures, banking and financial operations have become extremely difficult for the Cuban people, thereby hindering their efforts to integrate into the global supply chain.
