Under the theme “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” the 17th summit meeting will address topics such as climate, artificial intelligence (AI), multilateralism, and conflicts, among others.
The forum is the bloc’s main political meeting, which seeks to strengthen economic, political, and social cooperation among its members and promote greater influence of Global South countries in international governance.
Managing this expansion is one of the challenges facing the Brazilian presidency in consolidating the multilateral cooperation mechanism that seeks to transform the current architecture of global power.
Authorities in attendance are also expected to express concerns about the escalation of protectionism and unilateral trade measures, in reference to the tariff war launched by US President Donald Trump.
Brazil has selected six strategic priorities for the forum: global cooperation in health, trade, investment and finance, climate change, AI governance, peace and security, and institutional development.
The meeting also represents an opportunity to advance climate negotiations and commitments to environmental protection ahead of talks at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), scheduled to be held in November in Belem, capital of the northern Amazon region of Para.
